by Christa Faust, Gary Phillips

Adapting what may be the most popular of graphic novels, by the edgy Hard Case Crime author, adding layers and exploring the nature of morality.

Faced with overwhelming poverty and a pregnant wife, a tragic, struggling comedian is forced to turn to crime. In his first heist, he is immersed in toxic chemicals that disfigure him bizarrely, driving him mad and thus giving birth to The Joker.

For years, the Clown Prince of Crime has been caught in a dance of violence with his greatest nemesis, the Batman. Escaping Arkham Asylum, he plots his most lethal caper. This will be the ultimate punch line… his KILLING JOKE.

In their mission to protect Gotham City, Batman and Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) pursue ruthless criminals such as the grandiose Maxie Zeus and Antonio “Python” Palmares. Simultaneously, Commissioner James Gordon and Detective Harvey Bullock take on a cartel distributing the latest designer drug–“giggle sniff,” derived from a venom created by The Joker.

This rapid-fire sequence of events spirals together to threaten Batman’s closest friends and allies, and locks the two eternal foes in their ultimate death match.

When Guy Fletcher protests at a feeble joke he overhears in his grotty local pub, he finds himself headbutted and struck by an idea in quick succession. Is it possible to trace a joke all the way back to its original source?

Guy’s meandering trail leads him to a humourless Hungarian dentist, a hyperactive troupe of Boy Scouts, a group of giggling grave-diggers and half a dozen undercover detectives. And there are some pretty odd things happening along the way. Guy is sure he’s being followed by a sinister Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman. He has an unfortunate accident on a banana skin. And there’s a fly in his soup.

Guy is on the verge of discovering something very unpleasant. Making jokes is no laughing matter…

I Was a Killing Joke
by Jodi.C.King

Killing Joke are worthy of more than a quiet mention on the back of the socially acceptable bands who rip off their riffs, so who else than a big-mouthed truth speaker to share her views and observations about a post punk / industrial rock band who remain superior to most, unknown to many, an inpiration to more and yet still utterly offensive to some.

An extended review of a unique band with a massive cult following, coupled with the real life soap opera of a jackanapes…

Killing Joke
by frank jenkinson

After the release of the first EP “Turn to Red” things were beginning to kick off for Killing Joke. This book consists of photographs taken in the autumn of 1979 of gigs at: Hope and Anchor 9/10/79, BBC Peel Sessions 17/10/79, No Petrol shoot 30/10/79, 101 Clapham 01/12/79, Music Machine 10/12/79, Moonlight Club 13/11/79 and 18/12/79. With the KJ’s there are as many claims of true stories as there are people who knew them, so I’m not offering any narrative but I can still see some sense of the excitement of those times.

The Final Crisis of the Stuart Monarchy
by Tim Harris, Stephen Taylor

There has been an explosion of interest in the ‘Glorious’ Revolution in recent years. Long regarded as the lesser of Britain’s seventeenth-century revolutions, a faint after tremor following the major earthquake of mid-century, it is now coming to be seen as a major transformative episode in its own right, a landmark event which marked a distinctive break in British history. This collection sheds new light on the final crisis of the Stuart monarchy by re-examining the causes and implications of the dynastic shift of 1688-9 from a broad chronological, intellectual and geographical perspective. Comprising eleven essays by specialists in the field, it ranges from the 1660s to the mid-eighteenth century, deals with the history of ideas as well as political and religious history, and not only covers England, Scotland and Ireland but also explores the Atlantic and European contexts. Encompassing high politics and low politics, Tory and Whig political thought, and the experiences of both Catholics and Protestants, it ranges from protest and resistance to Jacobitism and counter-revolution and even offers an evaluation of British attitudes towards slavery. Written in a lively and engaging style and designed to be accessible to a broader audience, it combines new research with the latest scholarship to provide a fresh and invigorating introduction to the revolutionary period that transformed Britain and its empire. TIM HARRIS is Munro-Goodwin-Wilkinson Professor in European History at Brown University STEPHEN TAYLOR is Professor in the History of Early Modern England and Head of Department at Durham University.
