by Mark Sisson, Brad Kearns

Mark Sisson—author of the mega-bestseller The Primal Blueprint—unveils his groundbreaking ketogenic diet plan that resets your metabolism in 21 days so you can burn fat forever.

Mounting scientific research is confirming that eating a ketogenic diet could represent one of the greatest nutritional breakthroughs of our time—and that it might be the healthiest and most effective weight loss strategy ever. Going “keto” by eating high fat, low-to-moderate protein and low-carb foods enables you to break free from the disastrous effects of carbohydrate dependency by resetting your metabolism and promoting metabolic flexibility—where your body learns to burns fat instead of sugar for energy, even when you go off plan.

Unlike many other ketogenic programs that require challenging restrictions and deprivation or offer misinformation, Mark Sisson, bestselling author of The Primal Blueprint and publisher of the #1 paleo blog MarksDailyApple.com, presents a unique two-step, scientifically validated approach for going keto the right way.  He first reveals the real secret to rapid and sustained weight loss, which is in becoming “fat-adapted” before entering full nutritional ketosis. This process allows your body to learn to burn fat more efficiently, resulting in increased and sustained weight loss over the long-term.  It takes as little as 21-days to reprogram your metabolism to burn fat for fuel, by ditching processed grains, sugars, and refined vegetable oils in favor of nutrient-dense, high fat, primal/paleo foods–and you’ll see immediate results. Next, you’ll fine-tune with Intermittent Fasting and then foray into full ketogenic eating for a further weight loss boost and improved health.

With The Keto Reset Diet, you can eat to total satisfaction by enjoying rich, high-satiety foods, and even weather occasional slip-ups. You’ll use keto as a lifelong tool to stay trim, healthy, energetic, and free from the disastrous health conditions caused by the typical American diet. With step-by-step guidance, daily meal plans and a recipe section with over 100 delicious keto-friendly recipes, this is the definitive guide to help the keto-beginner or the experienced health enthusiast understand the what, why, and how to succeed with ketogenic eating.

Fat for Fuel
by Dr. Joseph Mercola

For over a century, we’ve accepted the scientific consensus that cancer results from genetic disease due to chromosomal damage in cell nuclei. But what if cancer isn’t a genetic disease after all? What if scientists are chasing a flawed paradigm, and cancer isn’t a disease of damaged DNA but rather of defective metabolism as a result of mitochondrial dysfunction? What if that startling truth could revolutionize our understanding of other diseases as well —and show us a radical new path to optimal health?

In this groundbreaking guide, the first of its kind, New York Times best-selling author and leading natural-health practitioner Joseph Mercola explains how nearly all disease is caused by defective metabolic processes. Then he reveals what’s really causing your metabolism to go haywire: damage and dysfunction in the mitochondria, thousands of which are at work in nearly every cell in your body, generating 90 percent of the energy you need to stay alive and well. When mitochondria become damaged in large numbers, it is impossible to stay healthy.

Dr. Mercola shows you that you can to take control of your health simply by giving your body the proper fuel —and it’s not what you’ve likely been led to believe. A ketogenic diet, very low in carbohydrates and high in healthy fats, is the way to optimize the biochemical pathways that suppress disease and support healing. And the benefits can be astonishing —not only in treating or preventing serious illness, but in boosting your brainpower, increasing your energy, helping you lose weight and keep it off, and much more.

As you read this book, you’ll learn in clear, rational terms how your body works at a molecular level. You’ll finally understand the type of fuel it’s designed to burn in the most efficient way possible. You’ll find detailed guidelines for starting and sticking with a ketogenic eating plan. And you won’t have to wait a decade or two for metabolic mitochondrial therapy to make its way into the mainstream. You can build a healthier body and brain at the cutting edge of this exciting new discipline, starting right now.

Studies of Wound-induced Phenylpropanoid Metabolism in Fresh-cut Romaine Lettuce and Its Modification by Heat Shock
by Reinaldo Ismael Campos

“Wounding induces significant changes in the phenylpropanoid metabolism and therefore the quality of fresh-cut lettuce. A putative wound signal is though to be produced by wounding that stimulates phenylpropanoid metabolism; the first enzyme of which is phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL). Exogenous applications of some currently known stress signaling molecules (i.e., jasmonic acid (JA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), abscisic and salicylic acid) to fully mature leaves o f Romaine lettuce did not induce changes in PAL activity similar to that induced by wounding. However, application of JA, MeJA, or SA to the less mature, central leaves increased PAL activity; although the increase was far below that induced by wounding. The wound signal(s) produced in fresh-cut lettuce that induces PAL activity remains unknown.

Lettuce Recipes
by Olivia Smith

Lettuce (lactuca sativa) is an annual plant of the daisy family, asteraceae. It is most often grown as a leaf vegetable, but sometimes for its stem and seeds. Lettuce is most often used for salads, although it is also seen in other kinds of food, such as soups, sandwiches and wraps; it can also be grilled.in addition to its main use as a leafy green, it has also gathered religious and medicinal significance over centuries of human consumption. Lettuce is a rich source of vitamin k and vitamin a, and a moderate source of folate and iron. Contaminated lettuce is often a source of bacterial, viral, and parasitic outbreaks in humans, including e. Coli and salmonella.

Depending on the variety, lettuce is an excellent source (20% of the daily value, dv, or higher) of vitamin k (97% dv) and vitamin a (21% dv) (table), with higher concentrations of the provitamin a compound, beta-carotene, found in darker green lettuces, such as romaine. With the exception of the iceberg variety, lettuce is also a good source (10-19% dv) of folate and iron (table).

The BBQ Queens’ Big Book of BBQ
by Karen Adler, Judith Fertig

Don’t let the tiaras fool you: Adler and Fertig may advocate having fun while cooking, but they are serious about barbecue. They just know that women approach barbecuing differently than men: thinking about the whole meal, how to prep efficiently, how to energize leftovers, how to get creative with their recipes. The authors present all the basics, from ingredients and equipment to technique and preparations. Then they expand the repertoire by offering a variety of marinades, sauces, sides, and more sophisticated recipes. Factor in their queenly charm and wit, and you’ll have as great a time reading as you do barbecuing.

Street Style in America: An Exploration
by Jennifer Grayer Moore

What are the origins of highly specific denim fashions, such as bell bottoms, skinny jeans, and ripped jeans? How do mass media and popular culture influence today’s street fashion? When did American fashion sensibilities shift from conformity as an ideal to youth-oriented standards where clothing could boldly express independence and self-expression? Street Style in America: An Exploration addresses questions like these and many others related to the historical and sociocultural context of street style, supplying both A–Z entries that document specific American street styles and illustrations with accompanying commentary.

This book provides a detailed analysis of American street and subcultural styles, from the earliest example reaching back to the early 20th century to contemporary times. It reviews all aspects of dress that were part of a look, considering variations over time and connecting these innovations to fashionable dress practices that emerged in the wakes of these sartorial rebellions. The text presents detailed examinations of specific dress styles and also interrogates the manifold meanings of dress practices that break from the mainstream. This book is a comprehensive resource that will prove invaluable to fashion historians and provide fascinating reading for students and general audiences.

DIY Style
by Brent Luvaas

Armed with cheap digital technologies and a fiercely independent spirit, millions of young people from around the world have taken cultural production into their own hands, crafting their own clothing lines, launching their own record labels, and forging a vast, collaborative network of impassioned amateurs more interested in making than consuming.

DIY Style tells the story of this international do-it-yourself (DIY) movement through a major case study of one of its biggest, but least known contingents: the “indie” music and fashion scene of the predominantly Muslim Southeast Asian island nation of Indonesia. Through rich ethnographic detail, in-depth historical analysis, and cutting-edge social theory, the book chronicles the rise of DIY culture in Indonesia, and also explores the phenomenon in Europe and the United States, painting an evocative portrait of vibrant communities who are not only making and distributing popular culture on their own terms, but working to tear down the barriers between production and consumption, third and first world, global and local. What emerges from the book is a cautiously optimistic view of the future of global capitalism – a creative, collectivist alternative built from the ground up.

This exciting and original study is essential reading for students and scholars of anthropology, fashion, media studies, cultural studies and sociology.

Hipster Christianity
by Brett McCracken

Insider twentysomething Christian journalist Brett McCracken has grown up in the evangelical Christian subculture and observed the recent shift away from the “stained glass and steeples” old guard of traditional Christianity to a more unorthodox, stylized 21st-century church. This change raises a big issue for the church in our postmodern world: the question of cool. The question is whether or not Christianity can be, should be, or is, in fact, cool. This probing book is about an emerging category of Christians McCracken calls “Christian hipsters”–the unlikely fusion of the American obsessions with worldly “cool” and otherworldly religion–an analysis of what they’re about, why they exist, and what it all means for Christianity and the church’s relevancy and hipness in today’s youth-oriented culture.

Animal Farm

Animal Farm
by George Orwel

As ferociously fresh as it was more than a half century ago, this remarkable allegory of a downtrodden society of overworked, mistreated animals, and their quest to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality is one of the most scathing satires ever published. As we witness the rise and bloody fall of the revolutionary animals, we begin to recognize the seeds of totalitarianism in the most idealistic organization; and in our most charismatic leaders, the souls of our cruelest oppressors.

Animal Farm
by George Orwell

George Orwell’s famous satire of the Soviet Union, in which “all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.”

Animal Farm
by George Orwell

Since its publication fifty years ago, “Animal Farm” has become one of the most controversial books ever written. It has been translated into seventy languages and sold millions of copies throughout the world. This edition is being published to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of its original U.S. publication.

It features 100 full-color and halftone illustrations by world-renowned artist Ralph Steadman. As vital and relevant as it was fifty years ago, “Animal Farm” is a devastating satire of the Soviet Union by the man V. S. Pritchett called “the conscience of his generation.” A fable about an uprising of farm animals against their human masters, it illustrates how new tyranny replaces old in the wake of revolutions and power corrupts even the noblest of causes.

This anniversary edition includes Orwell’s proposed but unpublished preface to the original edition and his preface to the 1947 Ukranian edition. These appendices evoke the historical context in which Orwell conceived and wrote his classic novel.

George Orwell’s Animal Farm
by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities Harold Bloom

Tracing the rise of Napoleon as the leader of the barnyard animals and his ensuing dictatorship in the farmyard community, this classic satiric allegory serves as a warning to all societies as it depicts the slide from revolution to totalitarianism. Orwell transforms the seeming pastoral innocence of his setting into a pernicious political theater of repression and control. This new edition of critical essays examining Animal Farm provides 10 to 12 full-length critical essays for students of literature, plus a chronology of the author’s life, a bibliography, an index, and notes on the contributing writers.

Rival Views of Market Society and Other Recent Essays
by Albert O. Hirschman

Since the mid-twentieth century Albert O. Hirschman has been known for his innovative, lucid, and brilliantly argued contributions to economics, the history of ideas, and the social sciences. Two central and already widely admired essays in this collection explore new territory. The title essay distinguishes among four very different conceptions of the characteristics and dynamics of capitalist societies. A related plea for embracing complexity is made in “Against Parsimony,” a wide-ranging critique of traditional economic models. In other writings Hirschman revisits his own views on economic development, the concept of interest, and the roles of “exit” and “voice” in economic and social systems. This volume reaffirms the powerful originality and enduring value of Hirschman’s work.

So How’s the Family?
by Arlie Russell Hochschild

In this new collection of thirteen essays, Arlie Russell HochschildÑauthor of the groundbreaking exploration of emotional labor, The Managed Heart and The Outsourced SelfÑfocuses squarely on the impact of social forces on the emotional side of intimate life.

From the ÒworkÓ it takes to keep personal life personal, put feeling into work, and empathize with others; to the cultural ÒblurÓ between market and home; the effect of a social class gap on family wellbeing; and the movement of care workers around the globe, Hochschild raises deep questions about the modern age.
